Can’t decide whether this is weird, or actually quite brilliant, but I certainly can’t fault Johnnie Walker Blue Label Whisky if they are going to commission the building of a proper pipe organ from one of the UK’s oldest organ builders, Mander Organs, for a promotional bash.
Project organisers Bompas & Parr combined the 5-rank mobile organ – dubbed The Flavour Conductor – with an ‘immersive and theatrical experience’, using the latest flavour science from Oxford University to help whisky drinkers really appreciate the complex taste profile of Johnnie Walker Blue Label. The idea was to sip your whisky while the organ took you through a visual and musical spectacular which reinforced the different nuances of flavour. Try it for yourself:
The project went on world-wide tour after the first performance in London. See some nice close-up pictures of the organ, and Mander’s workshops, and read more about the thinking behind it here.
(And thank you to my correspondent Mark Jameson, who drew this extraordinary event to my attention.)
Makes you wonder what they could come up with for single malts!!
That’s an idea for a competition. Match the music with an appropriate drink… Morwenna
